Kevin Nayler

Is it possible to convey joy, pain, passion and indifference without any eyes? We have discovered that Kevin can using a combination between figures and highly saturated colors. Magic? Not at all, it’s just about art.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

Kevin: I am form a small village in Essex, after living in London for ten years, I decided to head back to my roots, I set up my own business and am a Master Painter specialising in Listed Buildings.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

K: I find my inspiration from studying the lives of people past and present, and would like to think of myself as a modern day Hogarth, who looked beneath the surface of the naked eye, looked deeper into the depths of the lives of the everyday day person, using it as a comparison from the upper class to the lower working class and, showing that money doesn’t make you a better person, that no matter how rich or poor, everyone still has their hidden deprivations and secrets.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

K: Georges Seurat is by fair my favorite artist and I admire his use of pointillism.

IAYJ: Future plans?

K: I have 6 new works in progress covering history and the making of historical events.

If you haven’t heard about John Kilar, please DO remember this name. His photography is a compendium of madness, powerful experiences and life itself. We would even dare to say he goes beyond life; he owns the privileged key, which gives access to a parallel oneiric world where time stops, where anything you thought wasn’t tangible or wan banned becomes real. Watching Kilar’s colorful and vivid work is almost a “religious” experience, we have seen God.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

John: I was born in Istanbul but I’ve spent the majority of my life in California.

IAYJ: What does art mean to you?

J: Art to me is the sole evidence of our thoughts, feelings and memories our species will leave behind when we disintegrate.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

J: Everywhere. Mostly nature. I try to perpetually create new experiences and realities for myself, and find myself to be most inspired while doing so.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

J: That one elephant who draws a self portrait.

J: Travel. Stay alive. Be of greater service to others.

Snjezana: I come from Zagreb, Croatia, last year I moved to Paris (live between two of these cities)

I: What does art mean to you?

S: Art is way of communication, something that goes beyond the words, making it’s own dimension, reality, and whatever is necessary.

I: Where do you find inspiration?

S: Inspiration is really everywhere.

I: Which are your favourite artists?

S: Also like inspiration, so many of them I would like to name.

I: Future plans?

S: Now I am on short brake, cause of the baby, so I plan to start taking photos again, soon. That’s the only plan for now, rest will follow.

Sometimes the thin line between dreams and reality can become confused and crossed. Charlotte manages to lead us to a world were dreams can be fulfilled. The sharp tones and subtlety of the details are, in our view, some of her characteristic features. Of course, what she dreams, imagines and sees is completely inimitable.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

Charlotte: I’m from Antwerp, Belgium and I’m a student at the royal academy of fine arts.

IAYJ: What does art mean to you?

C: I think art adds an extra layer to people. Whether it is by viewing it or by making it. For me, being able to express myself in an artistic manner means being able to let everything go. Every tension, every dream, every emotion, I can process them all while working.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

C: About everywhere! I love browsing the internet, walking through beautiful cities, meeting interesting people and I am completely addicted to buying art books and magazines. I try not to get too directly influenced by other people’s work though. That’s why I prefer inspiration from an unexpected corner and from another field of work than photography.

Lately I’ve been very inspired by the japanese wabi sabi aesthetics.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

C: I absolutely love the work of Mark Borthwick and other big names, but I equally enjoy the work of rising new photographers like Jeff Luker, Jennily Marigomen, Wai Lin Tse and others. So many others!

IAYJ: Future plans?

C: Too many to name! But for the near future, I really want to explore the possibilities of fashion in photography a bit more.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

Dirk: I’m from Brandenburg, Germany. But I’m currently living in Berlin.

At the moment I work as a sales assistant and study Photography.

Beside the work, I want to make everyday a picture, If I create it. So I prefer to take photos for my own pleasure.

IAYJ: What does art mean to you?

D: Art is in every point of view and no matter how, let it be Painting or Photography more then just a material memory.

So many undefined things flow in our life, so undefined is the photo. For me it means pictures are more in my world of ART.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

D: Some things just dont work by themselves because we all are influenced by something.

Therefore i find over and over again things about interesting locations or interesting faces in my everyday life, very simple on their personal manner.

Secretly I´m a silent and hidden observer of everyday life and internet, who comes to a conclusion over and over again from several influences which I use as inspiration.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

D: In the matter of Art-, Portrait-, Fashion- or polaroid-photography the following artists are important to me:

BriAnne Wills

American photographer based in Kiev shows us a wonderful portion of her work. We see outstanding feminity, desirable freshness, flawless elegance and longed freedom. Nonetheless, what we truly love about BriAnne is the way she treats light, seduces the camera and the audience with her versatile chamaleonlike character, being able to reproduce stories that could have been originally created in the 50s or the 70s, really worth having a look at.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

BriAnne: I’m from Portland, Oregon. But I’m currently living in Kiev, Ukraine. I work as a freelance photographer. Although I’m learning that I prefer to take photos for my own pleasure and not for money. Personal projects allow for more creative freedom.

IAYJ: What does art mean to you?

B: It’s creating something personal and sharing it with the world.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

B: Inspiration is key. I am inspired by interesting locations or interesting faces. Lately I’ve been inspired by my travels. I think it’s important to step out of the bubble or comfort zone in order to grow as an artist.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

B: I love so many photographers. Especially those whose style is organic, like Juergen Teller, Ryan McGinley, and Ellen Von Unwerth.

IAYJ: Future plans?

B: I plan to travel and live in different countries for a few more years. I want to broaden my horizon and continue to have adventures so I can always look back on my past and draw inspiration.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

Fabrizio: I come from Italy, and i’m based in Rome where I study architecture.

IAYJ: What does art mean to you?

F: Art means a lot for me because it’s the best way to say things difficult to say with words, art let us to go straight to the point most of times.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

F: From people, from all the people i usually meet on my way to uni for examples; their faces, hair, bodies, moves and voices have a great appeal to me. Music, movies and books inspire and help me a lot too of course.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

F: I like Franz Schubert, Michelangelo Antonioni, Hedi Slimane, Ryan Mcginley, Bernardo Bertolucci, Malcolm Liepke, Corinne Day, William Turner and so many others i don’t remember at the moment.

IAYJ: Future plans?

F: A plan about photography is an exhibition hopefully, and one about life is to graduate and move to somewhere else soon.

Sneaking into Scott’s world we feel like accompanying him to his true and deepest memories, where light embraces us from the very beginning. Evoking warm, magical and everyday instants, this American artist communicate to us and share these beautifully created photographs.

IAYJ: Where are you from and what do you do?

Scott: I’m originally from Denver, CO, where I was born and where I lived for 18 years. After graduating High School, I moved away to Minneapolis, MN for college. After my years as an undergraduate, I moved away again and spent various amounts of time in various places around the US, including Washington, DC, Athens, GA, Chicago, IL, South Bend, IN, and most recently New York, NY. I work now as a professional librarian and archivist.

IAYJ: What does art mean to you?

S: In a short sentence: Art is a vision of reality. In a longer sentence: The artist, through a chosen medium, communicates an inner world—a world populated with thoughts and emotions and sensory experiences that are exclusive to the artist; the challenge of the artist is to capture a vision of this inner world and then to translate that world to others who themselves have inner worlds but who together with the artist share a common world that is known as reality. Through the act of creating and sharing this vision, art can be a way for the artist to talk to another person, or simply a way for the artist to talk to herself.

IAYJ: Where do you find inspiration?

S: I find inspiration in the warmth of the shining sun and the sound of the falling snow.

IAYJ: Which are your favourite artists?

S: My favorite artists are those who create work that is honest and true.

IAYJ: Future plans?

S: I intend to crowd surf at least once. I intend to visit the fjords of northern Norway at least once. I intend to see all of my faraway friends again at least once.

Model and photographer, Ira can be seen both ways the camera’s range, and that gives her a talented point of view. What she does can be seen as herself: global, marked and unique. We could say she portraits as Guy Bourdin and sees the world as Joel Meyerowitz, but has few to envy, what makes her a gorgeous allroad.

We: Where are you from and what do you do?

Ira: Born in Moscow; not being based anywhere yet. London\NYC\Moscow I would say tho as an idea of where I enjoy hanging out. Spend most time in London recently. I do photography, modeling and plan to start a few more things.

W: What does art mean to you?

I: I’m still not sure. I kind of don’t like these words art, artist… it’s a bit cheesy. Just keep doing whatever feels right.

I: In my head

I: Don’t have any. I’m up to the idea to keep mind free of borders calling somebody your favorite.

Sophie Van Der Perre

We hear it, we touch it, we feel it; that’s how we feel like when looking at Sophie’s work. From any of her images a sense of freedom, joy and friendship is palpable, where the marriage of exuding energy and mysterious dances personify to the point that we want to take part in it too.

We: Where are you from and what do you do?

Sophie: I was born in a small village in Belgium and at the age of 19 I moved to Amsterdam and I still live here now. I’m a freelance fashion/documentary photographer.

W: What does art mean to you?

S: For me personally art means a way to express myself, my imagination and my reality. And sometimes combine the two. It’s about exploring and experimenting and losing myself in my work, and always growing and learning more.

W: Where do you find inspiration?

S: I find inspiration in little things and everything. But especially in a persons personality. It gives me inspiration to create a story.

W: Which are your favourite artists?

S: Marc Borthwick, Duane Michals, Diana Arbus, Ed Van der Elsken, Corinne Day, and many others.

W: Future plans?

S: I did a couple of exhibitions this year, wich gave me little time to create new work. I have some nice shows coming up this month, and after that I will be concentrating on shooting, and going on adventures and traveling again.

Lately seems as Mario Testino is the only fashion photographer in the world, but of course he’s not. Why not a mix between good and smart clothes with good and smart pictures? Light works for itself, feels like touching it, as if we were just there. It’s art, no need to be in a museum to certify it is.

We: Where are you from and what do you do?

Tatiana: I live in London and im in my final year of BA Fine Art.

W: What does art mean to you?

T: “resonator” or/and “amplifier”

W: Where do you find inspiration?

T: Inside and outside. Its a compound of things i’ve seen, read, heard, felt, learned, experienced, remembered and imagined.

T: I generally tend not to make any but when I do I prefer not to vocalize it :)

Common life can be described as an art, the art of living, of making our own way through our -and other’s too- lives. What we see can be seen, and what we keep can belong to another else. Since portraits appeared people developed an unnatural sense to know and talk about others, to get into the lives of others. Nicolas has his own life and shares his way of seeing it with us. Paris and it’s mysticisme, friends, living rooms… a bunch of common things, a bunch of art.

We: Where are you from and what do you do?

Nicolas: I grew up in french alps and right now I’m creating my architecture company in Paris. I also work as a freelance photographer.

W: What does art mean to you?

Nicolas: A way to express feelings and realities.

W: Where do you find inspiration?

N: Everywhere that I can. I’m always looking for answers to some undefined personal feelings. It helps me to turn intuitions into something concrete. But my favourite inspiration comes from people I’ve met.

W: Which are your favourite artists?

N: The only ones that I really need are musicians. Everywhere, anytime.

W: Future plans?

N: A lot! But right now I’d like to go to the seaside, in the North of France.

Natalia Sanabria

A glimpse to this young lady’s work will be enough to realise her big talent and potential in fashion illustration. Neat, colourful and full of details, her drawing shows the passion and great interest she feels for this art. She is also a graphic designer and as a photographer, she is able to create fantastic scenarios which seem just taken away from a magical world.

We: Where are you from and what do you do?

Natalia: I live in San José in a very cold but beautiful place full of nature. I started studying Graphic design but one year later I felt that I was missing painting, so I went on with both studies. Right now I work as a freelance graphic desinger, but what I enjoy the most is drawing, painting and taking pictures of the places I visit. My dream is working as an illustrator full time.

W: What does art mean to you?

N: I understand art as the ability to create anything unique and give expression to feelings, a way of creating beauty, of interpreting the images that inspire myself through different materials, textures, colours. Art has given me lots of satisfactions and it is seems people like my work, which I highly appreciate.

W: Where do you find inspiration?

N: In so many things: the sky, nature, music, Internet, fashion, objects that I collect as dolls, colourful stones and minerals, frost, patterned paper… A picture can ispire me as much as reaching the point that I want to draw it immediately and I look for the materials to translate it into an illustration.

W: Which are your favourite artists?

N: Gustav Klimt, Toulouse Lautrec, Degas, Rembrandt. Searching on the Internet I found out the work of the painter Alex Kanevsky and I got astonished by his technique and the colour palette he uses. Regarding fashion illustrators, Cecilia Carlstedt, Esra Roise, David Downton’s works are really inspiring and also the designs of Nicolas Ghesquiere, among many others.

W: Future plans?

N: Keep on exhibiting my paintings, get an agency that represents me as illustrator. Working on the most I love would be just great.

Today we stop at Ukraine to enjoy a bunch of pictures of this talented young photographer. His work has already been shown in several online magazines and photoblogs around the world, which is not surprising at all when every single image of his speaks by itself. Alexander is a genius capturing snapshots, where playful movement takes over and finds a place in your mind. What to say about the sensual, dreamy and mysteriuos atmoshpere he manages to create, an absolutely stunning parallel world.

We: Where are you from and what do you do?

Alexander: I’ve spent my 22 years in a post-soviet center of the universe, small city in the south of Ukraine. I’m not very positive about living here. Basically all my time is spent at work and filled with thoughts of how to move as far as it possible from here.Carrying camera everywhere with me gives an opportunity to snap everything that catches my attention and what I think is beautiful and worth being shot. I find it a best way to express myself.

W: What does art mean to you?

A: It doesn’t have to mean something. Art is a part of humans life, it’s something that lives inside and surrounds one always and everywhere. Not everyone is able to feel and see it. It’s all about the attitude and self-commitment.

W: Where do you find inspiration?

A: Actually I’ve lost one few days ago and still can’t find it. But usually it comes to me spontaneously. Often in my dreams. Surfing through the photographs in the internet gives a lot of inspiration as well, so many outstanding photographers out there.

W: Which are your favourite artists?

A: There are no actual favorites, I like them all. Every day I see more and more talented people who continue expand the boundaries of conformist life. Also I am really obsessed with all kind of artists who ended up committing suicide or of drug overdose.

W: Future plans?

A: The ultimate goal is to move somewhere out of this county, any help is highly appreciated!
